Merrymeeting Lake is one of the most desirable lakes in NH, known for its 1233 acres of crystal clear, deep, spring fed water.

Lake Stats:

  • Located in Strafford County in eastern New Hampshire, in the town of New Durham. Its outlet is the Merrymeeting River, flowing south and then northwest to Lake Winnipesaukee

  • Length: 3.10 miles

  • Width: 1.30 miles

  • Depth: 120 feet

  • Surface area: 1.93 sq miles

  • Surface elevation: 647 feet

Merrymeeting Lake has common loons which nest on the western shore.  The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department stocks the lake for recreational fishing. The lake is classified as a cold- and warm water fishery, with observed species including rainbow trout, landlocked salmon, lake trout, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, and horned pout.

There is a dam at the west end of the lake, which is used to control the lake's water level. Each year in the fall the water level in the lake is lowered via the dam. Water level is restored to its normal level in the spring by snow melt and rainfall. The Powder Mill Fish Hatchery is located at the base of the dam, and is fed by the overflow of the lake's water.

"Just southeast of the big lake, Merrymeeting Lake is one of the cleanest lake in the country. The crystal clear water sets the backdrop for great swimming, boating & fishing. A great spot for water skiing, tubing and snorkeling. Bring your boat by Merrymeeting Marina to fuel up and grab an ice cream with the kids.

Quieter than many of the larger lakes yet convenient to a variety of outdoor activities such as local hikes from the lakeside (Mount Caverly, Devil's Den, Mount Bet and Mount Molly) and skiing nearby at Abenaki or Gunstock Mountain.

Early summer you can usually expect to see a couple Loon families with new chicks and by late summer you'll picking your own blueberries along the shoreline. A wonderful lake to enjoy year-round! "

The summer season is full of fun and community. We love that our lakefront is very private and is situated that we are not near our neighbors on either side. The water is crystal clear and we have a sandy swim area that we access via granite stairs (with a railing) into the water. Jumping  or diving off the end of the dock you can see clear to the bottom and its over 15’ deep. We can dock two boats on the raisadock and have a private jetski dock with an automatic lift. Just press the button and you are on your way. We also have a deep mooring for visitors or to put the sunfish, canoe or kayaks. We enjoy the day at the shorefront with plenty of room to spread out and sunbathe, read a book or just hang out. There is a large shed that has electric, phone, internet and a refrigerator/freezer to keep plenty of beverages for the day. This set up is perfect for multi-generational users as the older folks stay up at the house on the covered porch and get a rest from the kids/parents that are lakeside. We love the return of the loons every year and hearing their calls in the evening. We have a veryactive lake association that posts daily water temperature in the summer along with lake levels.

Sponsors lake gatherings and fireworks, status of loons nesting and loon babies being born. Lake webcam to check the weather when you are at your desk! www.mmlake.org.
